"The Spirit of Hospitality Opens Doors of Opportunity" President General Linda Tinker Watkins DAR is a national organization of women who are descended from patriots who supported the war for independence. The organization was founded in 1891. The Fort Crailo Chapter was founded in 1933.NSDAR motto:"God, Home, and Country" exemplifies the main functions of the organization. Its objectives are: Historic Preservation Promotion of Education Patriotic Endeavor The National Society Web Site is located at: http://www.dar.orgMuch information about the national organization and state chapters can be learned from this site. The National Headquarters is at: 1776 D Street, Washington, D.C. (Near the White House) and occupies a city block owned completely by women. The buildings are impressive and Constitution Hall is one of the nicest auditoriums in Washington. Besides being used for many concerts, it also has been seen on the television programs, The West Wing and Jeopardy.
Genealogy is the route by which many find their way to DAR. Sand Lake Town Historian, Judy Rowe, has helped hundreds of men and women discover their "roots" to the Revolution and they have subsequently joined DAR and SAR (Sons of the American Revolution) as well as C.A.R. (Children of the American Revolution).
Service is the reason many descendants of Patriots join the organization. We provide many services through veteran's organizations and promote history education through competitions at local schools. We strive to education the public about such issues as the correct way to display the Flag of the United States as well conservation and historic preservation.
Fun- We meet 10 times a year, generally at the East Greenbush Library or Schodack Town Hall. The meetings are lively and educational. We have guest speakers address such issues as "God in the Constitution," "Animals In National Defense," "American Indians in American Society," and conservationists. We also have hosted historical re-enactors....Harriet Tubman, Abraham Lincoln, and others to help bring history alive and into the 21st century. We enjoy an annual holiday gathering and attend district meetings (called "Roundtable") to share ideas and fun with other area Chapters. Further, members of Fort Crailo can attend state conference and national conference (called "Continental Congress") in Washington, D.C. Members range in age from their 20s to their 80s. Over 75% of the Chapter members are online and receive their monthly chapter newsletter online. If you remember a relative who was a member of DAR, or have heard stories about an ancestor who participated in the Revolution, you can call Judy Rowe at the Sand Lake Town Hall (674-8424) for help in finding out more. Prospective members are always welcome to attend meetings to learn more about the organization. Call:To learn more call Chapter Registrar Ruth Udwary (518) 674-2657 e-mail fortcrailodar@earthlink.net
